・「ブルータス, お前もか」はシーザーの言った言葉だ. “Et tu, Brute? | You, too, Brutus?” are the words that came to (Julius) Caesar's lips [words spoken by (Julius) Caesar].

・それを言っちゃあおしまいだ. If you say (a thing like) that, you're finished [you'll ruin everything, all your efforts so far will be for nothing].

●犬がワン[ウー]と言った. The dog barked [went “woof, woof”].

・猫がゴロゴロ言っている. The cat's purring [going “purr, purr”].

・カラスがカアと言った. The crow cawed [went “caw, caw”].

・箱の中身がカタカタ言った. The contents of the box rattled.

・電子レンジがチン[ピッ]と言う. A microwave oven goes “ting” [“ping”].

言う口の下から

●禁酒すると言う口の下からもうビールの栓を抜いている. Just after saying he's [she's] giving up drinking, he's [she's] opening a bottle of beer.

言うことなし It cannot be faulted. | It's faultless [perfect].

●この成績なら言うことなし. Results like these cannot be faulted.

言うことを聞かない 〔手足や機械などが〕 refuse to work.

●その時以来, 左手が言うことをきかなくなった. Since then I have lost the use of my left hand.

・年を取ると体が言うことをきかなくなる. In old age the body becomes less responsive [mobile]. | When you get old you can't move around [do] as much as you'd like.

・パソコンが言うことをきかない. 故障したらしい. My computer just won't work. It's out of order, I guess.

言うところの

●あの岩が青木氏の言うところの「らくだ岩」だ. That rock over there is what Mr. Aoki called “Camel Rock.”

言うなれば so to speak; as it were.

●私にとってその国は言うなれば第二の故国だ. As far as I'm concerned that country is, so to speak, my second home.

言うに言われぬ unable to express in words [describe]; inexpressible; ineffable; indescribable; 《a circumstance that》 cannot be gone into.

●この詩には言うに言われぬ情緒がある. There are sentiments in this poem that cannot be described.

・今度の処分には言うに言われぬ事情があったんだよ. There were circumstances behind this latest punishment that can't be gone into.

言うに及ばず to say nothing of….

●彼女は英語は言うに及ばず, スペイン語や中国語まで話せる. She can speak Spanish and Chinese, to say nothing of English.

・彼は国内は言うに及ばず, 世界的に知られた指揮者だ. He's a conductor known throughout the world, to say nothing of his own country.

言うに事(を)欠いて though there are [should be] better things to say.

●言うに事欠いて, 結婚披露宴で新婦の過去をあばくなんて. How gauche! Of all things, revealing the bride's past at the wedding reception!

言うは易く行うは難し It is easier to preach than to practice. | It is easier [Easier] said than done. 【諺】 | It's a long way from saying to doing.
言うまでもない it is needless to say 《that…》; it need scarcely [hardly] be said 《that…》; it goes without saying 《that…》; I need hardly say [tell you]…; as everyone knows, ….

●事故の原因が会社のずさんなチェック体制にあることは言うまでもない. It goes without saying that the company's lax internal controls were the cause of the accident.

・彼が明治維新の功労者の一人であったことは言うまでもない. Everyone knows that he was one of the leading figures of the Meiji Restoration.

言うまでもなく (as a matter) of course; needless to say; it goes without saying.

●…は言うまでもなく not to mention [speak of]…; to say nothing of…; let alone…

・彼は英語は言うまでもなく独仏語も知っている. He knows French and German, to say nothing of English.

言うをまたない There is no need to say 《that…》; It goes without saying 《that…》.

●次期社長が彼であることは言うをまたない. That he's the next president of the company goes without saying.

言ってみれば You might say 《that…》.

●小説を書くというのは, 言ってみれば, 精神のストリップだ. 恥ずかしがっていたのでは何も書けない. Writing a novel is like [can be called] a striptease of the mind, you can't write anything if you are shy [easily embarrassed].

言わぬが花 The less said about it the better. | It would be better to leave it unsaid. | Better left unsaid.
